Price Trends
In April, the average price for a dozen Grade A eggs fell to $5.12, marking a 12.7% decrease from March's record $6.23 per dozen, as per the Consumer Price Index. This reduction ended a streak of rising prices since October 2024.
Despite the drop, egg prices remain 79% higher than in April 2024, reflecting the ongoing impact of supply chain disruptions and disease outbreaks on commodity prices.
Supply Challenges
The persistent bird flu outbreak, which has resulted in the deaths of over 169 million birds since early 2022, continues to affect the supply of egg-laying hens.
In April alone, outbreaks on farms in and led to the culling of more than 927,000 egg-laying hens, exacerbating the supply constraints.
