Funeral Arrangements
Pope Francis' funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, at St. Peter's Square, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, marking a departure from traditional burial practices as he requested to be interred at Rome's Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
The ceremony, expected to draw tens of thousands including world leaders, will be broadcasted globally, with specific arrangements for live coverage in Australia and a notable attendance list including leaders from Argentina, Italy, Brazil, France, the UK, Ukraine, the US, and Australia.
Conclave Process
The papal conclave, a centuries-old process to elect a new pope, is set to begin between 15 to 20 days after Pope Francis' death, involving 135 cardinals under 80, with a two-thirds majority needed for election.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the current camerlengo, oversees the transition including the conclave's organization, following a nine-day mourning period and the pope's funeral, with the conclave's secrecy ensured by oaths and the absence of outside communication.
