Charges and Arrest

Joseph Kling, 19, from Ocean Township, has been charged with arson and aggravated arson for sparking the Jones Road wildfire that burned over 15,250 acres in Ocean County.

Kling allegedly did not properly extinguish a bonfire made from wooden pallets, leading to the massive blaze. He was arrested and is awaiting a detention hearing.

Impact and Response

The wildfire, one of New Jersey's largest in 20 years, forced evacuations, destroyed a commercial building, and threatened thousands of structures. It is currently 50% contained.

Acting Governor Tahesha Way declared a State of Emergency. Despite the devastation, there were no reported casualties or significant damage to residential areas.
