A 19-year-old man from Waretown, New Jersey, has been charged with aggravated arson and arson for allegedly igniting the wildfire by improperly extinguishing a bonfire of wooden pallets.

The wildfire, which has become one of the largest in nearly two decades, prompted evacuations and air quality alerts across New Jersey and into New York.

Fire Response and Impact

The blaze has consumed over 15,100 acres, threatening structures and leading to the destruction of at least one commercial building and several vehicles.

Emergency services have managed to contain about 50% of the fire, with efforts ongoing amid forecasts of rain that could aid in controlling the wildfire.
