Midea is recalling approximately 1.7 million U and U Plus window air conditioners in the and 45,900 in due to a design flaw that can lead to mold growth, posing respiratory and infection risks.

The recall follows at least 152 reports of mold issues and 17 reports of health symptoms like respiratory infections and allergic reactions. Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the units and contact Midea for repairs or refunds.

Product Details and Remedial Measures

The affected units, sold under various brand names including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, and , were available in 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU sizes at major retailers and online from March 2020 to May 2025.

Midea offers consumers a choice between a full or prorated refund or a free repair, with the option for a partial refund requiring the return of the unit or proof of disposal. Repairs involve installing a new drain plug or sending a DIY kit.
