Legal Actions and Allegations
Faustin Nsabumukunzi, a 65-year-old beekeeper from Bridgehampton, NY, was arrested and charged with visa and naturalization fraud for concealing his involvement in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Nsabumukunzi allegedly oversaw and participated in the killings and rapes of Tutsis in Rwanda, using his position as a "Sector Councilor" to direct violence and set up roadblocks during the genocide.
Background and Implications
After the genocide, which resulted in an estimated 800,000 deaths, Nsabumukunzi moved to the U.S., where he lived under false pretenses for over two decades, attempting to gain U.S. citizenship.
If convicted, Nsabumukunzi faces up to 30 years in prison for his crimes, alongside potential deportation to Rwanda, where he could face life imprisonment.
