The Science Behind the Discovery
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, used laser pulses to stimulate individual cells in the retinas of five volunteers, creating a new color experience beyond the typical human vision spectrum, termed "olo".
The color olo is described as an intensely saturated greenish-blue, resembling a fluorescently glowing teal, and cannot be replicated outside the experimental setup, as per scientists.
The Artistic Response and Critique
British artist Stuart Semple claims to have created a paint called "YOLO" that emulates the experience of the new color by using pigments and fluorescent optical brighteners, despite scientists stating it's impossible to reproduce olo.
Semple's YOLO paint is marketed as a revolutionary product for artists, priced at £10,000 or £29.99 for those claiming to be artists, challenging the exclusivity of the scientific discovery.
